Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has announced a substantial increase in the 2025 capital budget for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), boosting the allocation by over 70% compared to 2024. The announcement was made during the 2024 Stakeholders’ Summit and International Day of Persons with Disabilities celebration in Ibadan, where Makinde was represented by his deputy, Bayo Lawal.
The 2025 capital budget for PwDs has been raised from ₦492 million in 2024 to ₦877.5 million. Additionally, the overhead cost for the Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities has increased from ₦315 million to ₦345 million. These increases are aimed at addressing requests made during budget town hall meetings, which include provisions for transportation empowerment, assistive devices, mobility equipment, and training for enforcement agencies.
Governor Makinde’s administration has also made strides in employment and inclusivity, recruiting 510 PwDs into the state civil service and mandating their inclusion across all ministries. The Oyo State Agency for Persons with Disabilities was established under the leadership of Barrister Ayodele Adekanmbi, who serves as its Director-General. The agency has been provided with operational vehicles and an office.
Oyo State has become a model for inclusive governance, with PwDs appointed as supervisory councilors and special advisers in all local governments. The government has also approved grants and subventions for disability cluster groups.
Makinde reaffirmed his commitment to inclusive governance, positioning Oyo State as a leading example for the empowerment of PwDs across the country.
