Zulum: Over 90% of Boko Haram Contained, Insurgents Still Active in Northeast

Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, disclosed on Sunday that over 90% of Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East have been contained by the Federal Government and security forces. However, he acknowledged that pockets of insurgents remain active, especially in areas like Lake Chad, the Sambisa Game Reserve, and the Mandara Hills.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Governor Zulum stated that while the insurgency has significantly diminished, Boko Haram fighters continue to operate, with a recent attack on Chadian soldiers prompting a decisive response from Chadian authorities. This resulted in many insurgents being driven into Nigeria, particularly Borno State.

Reflecting on the 15-year insurgency that began in 2009, Zulum noted the tremendous loss of lives and the abduction of many individuals, especially in Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa States. He praised the efforts of the military, the Civilian Joint Task Force, and the resilient people of Borno in combating the insurgency.

Looking ahead, Zulum expressed optimism that the region would experience further progress in the next two years as military operations continue. He hopes for the eradication of terrorism through greater collaboration with neighboring countries such as Cameroon, Chad, Niger, and Mali.
