APC Chieftain Decries Rising Food Prices, Calls for Subsidized Markets

Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has expressed deep concern over Nigeria’s escalating food prices, describing the situation as “worrisome and unbearable” for households.

In an interview on Saturday, Oyintiloye highlighted the struggles faced by many Nigerians, noting that some can no longer afford basic nutritional meals and have resorted to begging for survival. “The situation on the prices of food is becoming worrisome and extremely unbearable for the masses. Many households can no longer afford nutritional meals, while many are begging for survival,” he said.

He acknowledged government efforts, such as the federal food waiver policy and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) interventions, but noted that food prices remain alarmingly high, worsened by exchange rate fluctuations that have driven up the cost of imported items.

To ease the burden, Oyintiloye urged both federal and state governments to establish subsidized food markets, particularly during the festive season. “The federal government and states should set up food markets for people to buy basic food items at subsidized rates to cushion the challenge, at least for this festive season,” he suggested.

Additionally, he called on the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) to intensify efforts to safeguard consumer interests.

Oyintiloye warned that failure to address food inflation could lead to a further decline in living standards for many Nigerians.
