Iranian Student Detained After Removing Hijab in Protest, Transferred to Psychiatric Facility Amid Ongoing Investigations

A woman at an Iranian university removed her clothing in what appeared to be a protest after campus security reportedly detained her for not wearing a headscarf.

Video footage from Saturday shows the woman, partially undressed, sitting on a staircase in an outdoor area at a branch of Tehran’s Islamic Azad University. The video later captures her walking across the sidewalk and street, where security forces surround her and appear to escort her into a car.

In Iran, not wearing a hijab is a punishable offense under Sharia-based law, enforced by a task force known as the morality police. At universities, campus security monitors students to ensure compliance with the mandatory hijab rule.

Amnesty Calls For Release Of Iranian Woman Who Removed Clothes In Protest

The woman was initially taken to a police station and later transferred to a psychiatric facility, as reported by “Farhikhtegan”, an Iranian newspaper’s Telegram channel. A university spokesperson stated that the “true motive” behind the incident is still under investigation, according to “Farhikhtegan”.

In Iran, authorities have a record of transferring protesters to psychiatric centers, often attributing their resistance to issues with mental health.
