House Committee Report Challenges Cassidy Hutchinson’s Testimony on Key January 6 Note

A Republican-led House committee has released a report challenging a key piece of testimony given by Cassidy Hutchinson, a prominent witness in the investigation of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. According to the report, which was first obtained by ABC News, a handwriting analyst hired by the committee concluded that a note Hutchinson claimed to have written during the attack was actually penned by former White House lawyer Eric Herschmann.

During her June 2022 testimony, Hutchinson told the committee that she had written the note after being directed by her boss, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, to take dictation for then-President Donald Trump. The note, which suggested that Trump should tell those who had illegally entered the Capitol to leave, was presented by Rep. Liz Cheney during the hearing. Hutchinson stated that she had crossed out the word “illegally” in the note.

However, after Hutchinson’s testimony, Herschmann disputed her claim, saying he had written the note during a meeting at the White House. The House committee investigating the matter obtained samples of Herschmann’s handwriting and had them analyzed by an independent expert, who confirmed that the handwriting matched Herschmann’s, not Hutchinson’s. This report is part of the committee’s broader investigation into the work of the January 6 select committee.
