Armed Man Arrested Near Trump Rally in California, No Threat to Former President, Police Say

A man illegally carrying a shotgun and a loaded handgun was arrested near Donald Trump’s rally in Coachella, California, on Saturday, according to police.

The 49-year-old suspect, identified as Vem Miller, was driving a black SUV when he was stopped at a security checkpoint by deputies. Authorities found two firearms and a “high-capacity magazine” in his vehicle.

Miller was taken into custody “without incident,” according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s office, and was charged with possession of a loaded firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine. He was later released on a $5,000 (£3,826) bail.

The U.S. Secret Service assured that Trump “was not in any danger,” and the incident did not disrupt protective operations.

Before his release, Miller faced two misdemeanor weapons charges, with no federal charges filed. A local sheriff described the suspect as a “lunatic,” but emphasized that neither Trump’s safety nor that of the rally attendees was compromised.
