Ethel Kennedy, the iconic matriarch of the Kennedy political dynasty who dedicated her life to civil rights and social justice following the assassination of her husband, Robert F. Kennedy, has passed away at the age of 96.
Her grandson, former Rep. Joe Kennedy III, announced the news on Thursday, saying, “It is with hearts full of love that we announce the passing of our amazing grandmother, Ethel Kennedy. She passed this morning from complications related to a stroke suffered last week.”
Ethel leaves behind a vast legacy, including nine children, 34 grandchildren, and 24 great-grandchildren. “Please keep her in your hearts and prayers,” the family’s statement added.
Ethel Kennedy was hospitalized on October 8 after suffering a stroke in her sleep, according to family sources.
President Joe Biden praised her in a tribute: “Ethel Kennedy was an American icon – a matriarch of optimism and moral courage, an emblem of resilience and service. Devoted to family and country, she had a spine of steel and a heart of gold that inspired millions of Americans, including me and Jill. We were blessed to call her a dear friend.”
