Cholera Outbreak Claims 359 Lives Nationwide, Lagos Accounts for 43% of Cases

Cholera continues to wreak havoc across Nigeria, with 359 deaths reported in all 36 states. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has confirmed 10,837 cases, with children under five years old being the hardest hit.

Children aged 5 to 14 are also significantly affected by the outbreak. Lagos State has emerged as the epicenter, accounting for 43% of the cases, with 4,667 confirmed infections.

The NCDC’s report highlights a sharp increase in cholera cases in 2024, citing factors like conflicts, banditry, kidnappings, and flooding for the 239% surge. Among the most impacted states during week 39 are Adamawa (131 cases), Ebonyi (30 cases), Borno (29 cases), Kano (7 cases), and Jigawa (1 case).

Adamawa remains a critical hotspot, with 535 suspected cases in the past month alone. The NCDC is actively monitoring the situation, as efforts to contain the outbreak continue.
