This dedication was evident during the inauguration of construction works for the Gusau International Airport in the state capital yesterday, officiated by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

The Gusau Airport project is designed to be a smart airport capable of handling both domestic and international flights. The airport will feature a 3.4-kilometer primary runway suitable for large commercial aircraft, along with the installation of runway lighting and navigational aids.

The airport will also include a modern terminal building equipped with passenger facilities such as check-in counters, automated baggage handling systems, waiting areas, and customs and immigration services. Additionally, an air traffic control tower fitted with advanced communication and surveillance systems will be constructed.

The project will encompass the building of maintenance hangars, fire and rescue stations, fuel storage facilities, access roads, parking facilities, water supply, sewage, electrical systems, and telecommunication infrastructure. Furthermore, a cargo wing and landscaping efforts will enhance the airport’s operational capabilities and aesthetic appeal. The entire project, which will be executed by Triacta Nigeria Limited with JBI Tech Consult as the consulting firm, is slated for completion within 30 months.

Governor Lawal emphasized that the airport is a strategic initiative to attract local and international investments, thereby boosting the state’s economy and social infrastructure. He highlighted that the airport would facilitate easier and more efficient travel, enhancing business, tourism, and social interactions in Zamfara State.

Minister Keyamo noted that Zamfara had previously been at a disadvantage concerning certain facilities. He emphasized the necessity of the airport, not just for commercial reasons but as a crucial social amenity for the people of Zamfara.

He expressed confidence in the state’s readiness for this development and committed to supporting the project. Keyamo also indicated a desire to see Hajj operations flagged off from Gusau Airport next year, alleviating the hardships faced by Zamfara pilgrims who previously had to travel to other states to board flights to the holy land.

Governor Lawal and Minister Keyamo highlighted the significant economic benefits of the Gusau Airport Project. They expect the airport to enhance the ease of doing business in Zamfara, improve social interactions and mobility, support local businesses in exporting and importing goods and services, and provide a direct air access route to the state, thereby reducing travel difficulties for residents and businesses.

Governor Lawal’s vision and commitment, along with the federal government’s support, aim to reposition Zamfara as a key player in Northern Nigeria’s commercial landscape, ensuring sustained development and improved quality of life for its residents.
