Manchester City secured their first Club World Cup title, concluding 2023 with a total of five trophies, following a dominant 4-0 triumph over Fluminense in Jeddah on Friday.
City’s success, initiated by Julian Alvarez’s early goal within the first minute, showcased European clubs’ continued dominance in the competition since 2012. Fluminense’s aspirations for an upset dwindled further with Nino’s first-half own goal, and late strikes by Phil Foden and Alvarez sealed City’s victory.
While City faced doubts due to their Premier League struggles before the tournament, the match underscored the widening gap between Europe’s elite clubs and the rest of the world.
Having won 22 consecutive games at the Club World Cup, City’s quick start in this match contrasted with their semi-final against Urawa Reds. Despite a laborious first half, they cruised to a 3-0 win in the previous encounter.
In the final, it took less than 45 seconds for City to take the lead, capitalizing on a mistake from Fluminense’s Marcelo. Nathan Ake’s effort rebounded off the post, allowing Alvarez to chest the ball into the net. At just 23, Alvarez added another accolade to his impressive collection of silverware.
Rodri Injury Concerns
Fluminense suffered a decisive setback when captain Nino inadvertently redirected Phil Foden’s cross into the net, capitalizing on a breach in the Brazilian defense prompted by Rodri’s pass.
Despite a stellar performance by goalkeeper Fabio, who thwarted several City attempts, including saves from Jack Grealish and Foden, City maintained control throughout the second half.
However, the triumph came at a potential cost as Rodri sustained an injury and had to leave the field 20 minutes before the final whistle. City faces concerns as they have experienced difficulties in Premier League games without the influential Spanish midfielder.
Nonetheless, this victory adds another highlight to City’s extraordinary year, building on their treble success in the Champions League, Premier League, and FA Cup last season.
The triumph also marks a significant achievement for coach Pep Guardiola, who secures his fourth Club World Cup, achieving this feat with three different clubs—Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and now Manchester City.
