Hijab Ruling: Drama Unfold As Lawyer Arrives In Anambra Court Wearing A Pastoral Robe

Thursday’s proceedings in the Okpoko magistrate court in the Ogbaru Local Government Area, near Onitsha, Anambra State, were disrupted by a lawyer named Ogbachalu Goshen who attended the court dressed in full priest robes and appeared as a reverend.

Until a matter was brought up and Goshen announced his participation as a defense lawyer, the court proceedings, presided over by Her Worship CB Mbaegbu, were ongoing.

He objected when the Magistrate informed him he couldn’t appear in such attire and speak to the court, citing a recent Supreme Court decision that supported female pupils wearing the hijab in public schools as a prime example.

As the Magistrate stood her ground that he cannot appear in her court in that mode of dressing, Goshen also insisted that it was his right and that the objection by the Magistrate was an infringement on his fundamental rights as enshrined in Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

As the arguments continued with both the Magistrate and the lawyer refusing to shift ground, the Magistrate rose, thereby forcing the court to dismiss immediately.

Various lawyers and people who came for different matters filed outside as the Magistrate immediately entered her car and drove off.

But in an interview, Goshen justified his actions and said that the incident had already become a constitutional matter since the Supreme Court made such a ruling.

He said that the court should also address what will happen if a Muslim female lawyer shows up to court wearing a hijab.

He claimed that because the Supreme Court reached its decision, he should be permitted to identify himself in court as an ordained priest as well.

When asked whether the decision serves the interests of the judiciary, he said that it is still a precedent that must be obeyed unless a judicial review is conducted.
