Senate To Take A 19-day Sallah Break

Nigeria Senate
The Senate adjourned plenary on Wednesday to allow it to proceed during the Sallah break.

As a result, July 19, 2022, was set as the date for the resumption of activities by Senate President Ahmad Lawan.

Before embarking on a three-week break, the Senate transmitted to the Committee on National Planning the President’s request for the confirmation of Mohammed Bello as Chairman of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission.

The Federal Medical Centres (Establishment) Bill, 2022, was also approved after being re-referred to the Committee of the Whole for consideration and approval.

The Deputy Senate Leader, Ajayi Boroffice (APC, Ondo North), who sponsored the motion for re-committal, recalled that the bill was passed by the National Assembly and forwarded to President Buhari for assent.

According to him, some fundamental issues which required fresh legislative action by both houses of the National Assembly emerged after a critical analysis of the bill.

He added that a Technical Committee of the Senate and House of Representatives and Directorate of Legal Services met and worked on the bill.

The Senate reversed its judgment on the bill as passed and re-referred it to the Committee of the Whole for further study and passage, citing order 1(b) and order 52(6) of the Senate Standing Order, 2022 as modified.

Following their lengthy break for the primary elections of respective political parties, the senators had only met six times. They resumed on June 14 and met twice weekly for three weeks.

Before that, on May 11, the Senate began a five-week recess to take part in the political parties primaries for the general elections of 2023.
