Court Denies Hearing Of Lawyer Dressed In Native Doctor Attire

Malcolm Omihrhobo, a lawyer for human rights, appeared in court on Monday dressed as a “native doctor,” but Justice Tijani Ringim of a Federal High Court in Lagos declined to hear his two cases.

The lawyer also had cowries tied around his two legs and was barefoot. He was wearing his lawyer’s robe on top of his wig, which had two long feathers, cowries in each hand, and a crimson wrapping tied around it.

Some lawyers objected to the human rights lawyer’s appearance before Justice Ringim due to his attire, claiming that he could not be heard since he was not dressed appropriately for a lawyer before the court.

Omihrhobo, who on Thursday stirred controversy at the Supreme Court in Abuja by showing up in court in the same manner, said that if he was not heard, it would be a breach of his rights; he added that the rules could not supersede the country’s constitution.

He said, “My Lord, the rules cannot supersede the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Upon his argument, Justice Ringim, however, directed Omihirhobo to address the court on why he should be heard the way he was dressed on the next adjourned date in a suit delineated to FHC/L/CS/929/2022; (Chief Malcolm Omihrhobo) sued the Federal Government of Nigeria and others.

The same situation happened in his second lawsuit, FHC/L/CS/1392/2021, filed before the same court against the Nigeria Army and two other parties.

The address must be filed with the authorities before the postponed date and cannot exceed five pages, the court said.

When his case was called, he announced his arrival as the applicant, and other attorneys, including Festus Afeyodion and Abdullah Dania, requested that the court not hear him since he was not properly robbed.

Dania said, “I am a lawyer, my Lord can imagine the way my learned friend appears before the court as a professional. The rules that govern us as a lawyer do not allow improper dressing.”

Adamu told the court that he would like to furnish the court with his written submission in line with the direction of the court.

The judge said, “You cannot address the court like this as a professional. I will adjourn your matter and you come and address the court if the rules allow you to appear in court like this.”

Consequently, the judge adjourned to October 10, 2022.
