FG Examines 300 Inmates In Lagos For Presidential Pardons

The Presidential Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy has begun evaluating detainees in Lagos State for release under President Muhammadu Buhari’s Prerogative Mercy.
The activity was launched off at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre by Mr. Abubakar Malami (SAN), the committee’s Chairman and Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
Mrs. Leticia Ayoola-Daniel, the Lead at the committee meeting, represented Malami.
In Lagos State, he added, roughly 300 inmates would be examined, with 80 of them being considered for a pardon.
He did say, however, that the pardon would be conditional on the offenders meeting the requirements.
Critical sickness, advanced age, and more than ten years in detention were among the conditions, according to the ministry.
According to the Nigerian News Agency (NAN), the committee was established on Aug. 28, 2019, to help the president in carrying out his responsibilities under Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution of issuing pardons to deserving criminals.
Malami claimed that the prerogative of mercy only applied to federal offenses, such as bunkering.
The group was reconvened on Sept. 28 to carry out the duty in all six political zones, according to the minister.
“It is noteworthy to emphasize that the committee was reconvened in light of the importance of the committee’s mandate,” Malami added.
“I would like to take this occasion to extend the thanks of this committee to our partners in the exercise: Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Minister of Interior, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola, and the Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service,” he added.
The team had already visited the Kuje Custodial Centre in Abuja, where roughly 40 convicts had been examined, according to Malami.
In Lagos State, he said, roughly 300 detainees would be assessed.
“However, only 80 names of inmates who meet the criteria, both males and females, would be submitted to the National Council of States for onward recommendation to President Buhari,” he said.
