2027: PDP Senate Caucus Opens Door to Coalition, Insists Parties Must Lead

The Senate Caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expressed readiness to support a political coalition aimed at unseating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections but with a clear condition: such a coalition must be spearheaded by political parties, not individual actors.

Speaking after a strategic meeting in Abuja, Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (Benue South) emphasized the PDP’s official position.
“The Senate Caucus of the PDP states that it is not adverse to the idea and ideals of coalition. The caucus advises that any such coalition should be driven by political parties and not individuals,” Moro said.

He added that as Nigeria’s largest opposition party, the PDP is well-positioned to lead any future alliance.
“Therefore, if a coalition becomes necessary, the PDP should drive it,” he declared.

The caucus’s position comes amid rising political activity and reports of an emerging alliance involving former PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and ex-Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai an alliance many see as a direct challenge to President Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Despite growing coalition talks, the PDP Governors’ Forum had earlier announced that the party would not participate in any merger or coalition ahead of 2027, fueling speculation of internal divisions.

Rumors have also intensified around Atiku’s political future, with suggestions he may consider running on a different platform, potentially alongside Peter Obi under the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) umbrella.
Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, confirmed ongoing consultations.
“The process is ongoing. A lot of ground has been covered. The focus now is on building a viable platform,” he said.

Addressing concerns over the PDP’s internal crises, the Senate Caucus dismissed fears of the party’s collapse, affirming that the PDP remains resilient and is undergoing necessary reforms.
“The current crisis in the PDP is not unique. Other opposition parties and even the ruling APC are facing similar internal challenges,” Moro stated.

The caucus urged members to remain loyal and confident in the party’s ability to emerge stronger in the lead-up to the next general elections.

Underscoring the importance of a functional opposition, the caucus warned against the erosion of democratic pluralism.
“The beauty of democracy lies in the existence of a robust opposition to hold the ruling party accountable. Celebrating the emasculation of opposition parties and a drift towards a one-party state does not advance democratic ideals,” the statement read.

In conclusion, the PDP Senate Caucus reaffirmed its support for the principles of coalition politics, stating that genuine collaborations can deepen Nigeria’s democratic experience provided they are structured and party-led.
