Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State has approved the implementation of a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for civil servants, effective December 2024. The announcement was made by Mamman Mohammed, the Governor’s Director-General for Press and Media Affairs, in a statement issued on Saturday in Damaturu.
The approval follows recommendations from a state committee tasked with reviewing the minimum wage. According to Mohammed, the committee proposed a comprehensive reconciliation of local government finances to ensure a smooth transition from the current salary structure to the new wage. “The reconciliation process is nearing completion and is expected to be finalized soon, allowing for the swift enrollment of local government employees into the new salary framework,” he said.
Governor Buni’s approval is seen as a significant step toward improving the welfare of state workers. In return, the state government expects civil servants to enhance productivity and contribute to more efficient service delivery.
While the adjustment will apply to state civil servants, the ongoing reconciliation process will also include local government employees once finalized.
