Wilfred Ndidi Named Super Eagles Captain Ahead of AFCON 2025

Nigeria midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been confirmed as the new captain of the Super Eagles, taking over leadership duties ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Speaking on his appointment, the Beşiktaş midfielder described the role as a major responsibility, stressing that leadership in the national team must be collective rather than centred on one individual.

“It’s a huge responsibility, and with the help of the players, I think everything will go smoothly,” Ndidi said in an interview with the Super Eagles media department.

The 29-year-old revealed that he has already begun consultations within the squad, particularly with senior players, to ensure unity and alignment as Nigeria targets a fourth AFCON title.

“I’ve had a conversation with a couple of players, just some of the older players. You know, just try to make them understand the reason why we’re here. Also need the support from the staff. We’re all in this together,” he said.

Ndidi emphasised the importance of clarity, focus and shared purpose within the group, noting that leadership discussions have centred on keeping the squad committed to its objectives.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the last World Cup, the new captain admitted the disappointment still lingers but believes the team now has a fresh opportunity to restore pride.

“Yeah, it was a sad one. Missing out on the World Cup. And this is another opportunity, you know, they say another day, another opportunity,” he said.

According to Ndidi, renewed commitment and unity could help the team reconnect with Nigerians and achieve success on the continental stage.

Confirming the appointment, the Super Eagles’ official handle announced: “Wilfred Ndidi has been named Captain of the Super Eagles and says the responsibility means everything as Nigeria heads to Morocco.”

Ndidi will lead the three-time African champions at AFCON 2025, where Nigeria are drawn in Group C alongside Tanzania, Uganda and Tunisia. The Super Eagles will open their campaign on December 23.

His appointment follows the retirement of William Troost-Ekong from international football and the prolonged absence of former captain Ahmed Musa, who has not featured for the national team in recent months. Troost-Ekong, who was named in Nigeria’s preliminary squad, surprised many fans by ending his international career before the final squad list was released.

As preparations intensify for the continental showpiece, Ndidi has made it clear that unity and collective effort will be central to the Super Eagles’ quest for glory in Morocco.
