Wike Slams Abuja Public Transport as ‘National Embarrassment,’ Vows Major Overhaul

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has condemned the current state of Abuja’s public transportation system, describing it as a “national embarrassment” and pledging urgent reforms to restore structure and dignity to the sector.

Wike made the remarks during an inspection tour of ongoing infrastructure projects across Kugbo, Mabushi, and Giri districts. He was accompanied by former governors Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State.

The minister said the administration is working to integrate roadside taxi operations into a unified and secure transport system, aiming to end the chaos that currently defines commuting in Nigeria’s capital city.

According to Wike, the construction of modern bus terminals forms a key part of the broader reform agenda. These terminals, set to be commissioned as part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-year anniversary celebrations, are designed to offer safe, efficient, and organized commuting for residents.

“It’s unfortunate for a country like this a Federal Capital Territory  that we cannot boast of a proper transportation system. Every time we travel out of the country, we see how it’s done elsewhere. We should be able to replicate that,” Wike said.

He assured residents that the new transport model will deliver a predictable, modern, and dignified travel experience for all users. While expressing satisfaction with the progress of the projects, Wike called on local contractors to maintain high standards of delivery, warning that subpar infrastructure would not be tolerated.

“I am very happy with what I’ve seen,” Wike told journalists. “But when you see some errors, you have to point them out. That doesn’t mean you’re not satisfied. The last time we came here, I expressed my dismay. This time, I can say there’s clear improvement, and by the time we return for commissioning, it will be something else entirely.”
