FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has donated a total of 50 operational vehicles to various security agencies in a bid to strengthen the fight against insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This measure aims to support security agencies with the necessary logistics to combat crime effectively in the capital city.
The distribution of the vehicles is as follows:
FCT Police Command: 24 vehicles
Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps: 8 vehicles
Advance Party/Security Monitoring, FCT Administration: 6 vehicles
Department of State Services: 5 vehicles
Guard Brigade of the Nigerian Army: 3 vehicles
Nigeria Air Force, 005, Abuja; Naval Unit; Nigerian Immigration Service; National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency: 1 vehicle each
Minister Wike emphasized the importance of security as a key agenda in the renewed hope mantra, stating, “We are no longer talking about infrastructure; we are no longer talking about taking development to the Area Councils; we are now talking about a key factor, a key agenda in the renewed hope mantra, and that has to do with security. We are not just concentrating on infrastructure; we are not only concentrating on bringing development to the hinterland; we are also concentrating on providing security in order to protect lives and property.”
He highlighted that one of President Bola Tinubu’s key priorities is the security of lives and property, noting, “Any leader that cannot secure the lives and properties of citizens has no business in governance. It is a priority for President Tinubu that Nigerians are secured, and who are those that are responsible? It is the security agencies.”
Wike further explained that the government’s role is to provide the tools necessary for security agencies to combat crime, adding, “For us as a government, it is not the responsibility of Mr. President to go and identify where the criminals are; it is not my responsibility or the Minister of State’s responsibility to go and engage criminals. It is our responsibility to provide the tools for the security agencies to confront these criminals and make sure we sleep with our two eyes closed.”
The minister urged residents to support and pray for security agencies, acknowledging their sacrifices in the line of duty. He commended the security agencies for reducing the crime rate in the FCT and promised continued support by providing necessary tools for their operations.
Wike also urged the security agencies to use the vehicles for the benefit of society and not for personal use, stating, “It is not for you to use as private vehicles because it is air-conditioned, then you use it to be carrying your wives, instead of the purpose it was meant for.”
Director of the Security Services Department, Mr. Adamu Gwary, noted the rising concern over the security situation in and around the FCT. He stated that the operational vehicles would enhance the capacity of security agencies in fighting crime, responding promptly to distress situations, and addressing security challenges in the territory. “However, crime prevention is the responsibility of all, and as such, all hands must remain on deck to ensure the safety and security of all,” he added.
