VP Shettima Inaugurates National Road Safety Council, Sets Targets for Improvements

Vice President Kashim Shettima has inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council (NaRSAC) with a mandate to adopt global best practices to reduce traffic accidents and enhance road safety in Nigeria. Speaking at the ceremony held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, Shettima emphasized the crucial role of road safety in connecting citizens and promoting national well-being.

He commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for its comprehensive strategy in addressing road traffic challenges and urged the council to establish clear targets for the National Road Safety Strategy (NRSS). Shettima also stressed the importance of collaboration between federal, state, and local governments in achieving the council’s objectives.

NaRSAC’s formation follows recommendations from the World Bank Country Capacity Review to improve Nigeria’s road traffic administration. Shehu Mohammed, the FRSC Corps Marshal and council secretary, vowed to implement the NRSS, which aims to achieve zero road crash casualties using the internationally recognized “safe system approach.”

The council, chaired by the Vice President, includes six governors representing the country’s geopolitical zones and ministers from key sectors, reflecting a nationwide commitment to road safety reforms.
