Prosecutors have formally charged 22-year-old Tyler Robinson with the aggravated murder of conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, announcing Tuesday that they will pursue the death penalty in the high-profile case stemming from a Sept. 10 shooting at Utah Valley University.

Robinson faces a total of six felony counts, including:

• Aggravated murder
• Felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury
• Obstruction of justice
• Two counts of witness tampering
• Commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child

Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray described Kirk’s killing as “an American tragedy,” and said the decision to seek the death penalty was made with “grave consideration.” Robinson will remain in custody without bail, Gray confirmed.

Robinson appeared virtually for his initial court hearing Tuesday, where a judge read the charges. The suspect responded only to confirm his name and remained emotionless throughout the proceedings. His next hearing is scheduled for September 29, by which time he is expected to have legal representation.

Robinson was taken into custody on the evening of September 11, after his father identified him in surveillance images circulated by law enforcement. According to charging documents, Robinson had confessed to the killing and reportedly told his father that there was “too much evil” in the world.

Authorities allege that the weapon used in the attack — a rifle — matched one gifted to Robinson by his family. He was originally booked into the Utah County Jail on suspicion of aggravated murder and related charges.

Utah Governor Spencer Cox last week credited Robinson’s family for cooperating with law enforcement, noting that the suspect’s father and stepmother recognized him in media coverage and voluntarily came forward.

“The family made a courageous decision,” Cox said at the time. “Their integrity played a critical role in swiftly resolving a case that has shaken the nation.”

Charlie Kirk, a polarizing conservative activist and founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot during a public event on the university campus. Authorities have not yet released a motive, though early reports cite signs of radicalization in Robinson’s recent online behavior.
