Emma Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, has been eliminated from the tournament following a dramatic first-round defeat to Sofia Kenin.
Raducanu, who achieved a surprising victory at Flushing Meadows as a teenage qualifier, has yet to secure another win in New York since her breakthrough.
In a “rollercoaster” match, Raducanu was defeated 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 by Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open champion. Despite an early struggle in the final set, Kenin managed to capitalize on Raducanu’s falter, breaking serve at 2-2 and ultimately sealing the victory.
Kenin, who has also faced challenges with form since her major triumphs, expressed her satisfaction with the win.
“It was a rollercoaster match. Emma is such a tough player and she played some great tennis. I’m just super happy to have won,” Kenin remarked post-match.
Kenin’s next opponent will be either Jessica Pegula or Shelby Rogers in the second round, continuing her quest for a strong performance in the tournament.
