U.S. Military Strikes Dozens of ISIS Targets in Syria in Retaliation for Deadly Attack

The U.S. military carried out retaliatory strikes on dozens of ISIS targets in Syria on Friday, according to a statement released by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on social media.

U.S. Central Command said more than 70 ISIS targets were hit during the operation, with approximately 100 munitions deployed using a combination of fighter jets, attack helicopters, and rocket artillery.

Hegseth said the operation—dubbed Operation Hawkeye Strike—was conducted to destroy ISIS fighters, infrastructure, and weapons sites in response to an attack on U.S. forces in Palmyra, Syria, on Dec. 13.

U.S. Central Command also confirmed that Jordanian fighter aircraft participated in the strikes.

“This is not the beginning of a war — it is a declaration of vengeance,” Hegseth said. “The United States of America, under President Trump’s leadership, will never hesitate and never relent to defend our people.”

The strikes follow the deaths of three Americans in Palmyra last Saturday. CENTCOM said the attack was carried out by a lone Islamic State gunman, who was later killed.

President Donald Trump said the military action was delivering “very serious retaliation” against those responsible for the attack, adding that the strikes targeted ISIS strongholds in Syria and were conducted with the support of Syria’s new government.
