Umahi Seeks Increased Chinese Investment, Technology Transfer for Nigeria

Minister of Works, David Umahi, has called on the Chinese government to expand its investment in Nigeria and facilitate technology transfer to boost the country’s economic and infrastructural development.

During a courtesy visit by Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, Umahi acknowledged the role of Chinese firms—CCECC, CHEC, CBC, and CGC—in executing key road and infrastructure projects across Nigeria.

He stressed that China has a vested interest in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s economic agenda, particularly in infrastructure development. Umahi also urged for advanced technology transfers and specialized training for Nigerian engineers.

“We admire China’s world-class infrastructure development and request the transfer of such advanced technologies to Nigeria, along with specialized training for our engineers,” he said.

Beyond infrastructure, Umahi advocated for deeper bilateral cooperation, calling on China to fast-track discussions on the naira swap deal to ease fund transfers and strengthen trade relations.

In response, Ambassador Yu Dunhai praised Nigeria’s cultural diversity and entrepreneurial strength, recognizing the country as one of the world’s leading exporters. He also commended President Tinubu’s leadership in delivering quality infrastructure and reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria.

“With Nigeria now a BRICS member, we see greater opportunities for collaboration, and the naira swap deal remains a viable solution for smoother transactions,” Yu stated.

The discussions mark another step in deepening Nigeria-China relations, with a focus on technology transfer, infrastructure expansion, and economic cooperation.
