Ukrainian Drone Attack on Southern Russia Ferry Leaves One Dead, Multiple Injured

A Ukrainian drone attack on a ferry at a port in southern Russia has resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, according to Krasnodar Governor Veniamin Kondratyev. The attack caused a fire on the ferry at Port Kavkaz, though Kondratyev assured there was no risk of the fire spreading.

Port Kavkaz is situated a few kilometers from the Kerch bridge, a crucial link for road and rail travel between Russia and the Crimean peninsula, which Russia annexed in 2014. Kondratyev confirmed, “Unfortunately, there are injured and dead among the crew and port staff,” adding that emergency services were on-site.

Ukraine previously targeted the same area in late May, striking an oil terminal near Port Kavkaz. The region around the Russian-built bridge over the Kerch Strait has been a frequent target of Ukrainian attacks since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Russian navy ships based in Crimea have suffered significant damage or been sunk in these attacks. Earlier this month, the head of Ukraine’s navy reported that the Russian Black Sea Fleet had relocated nearly all of its warships from occupied Crimea to other ports.

In a related incident overnight, Ukraine’s air defenses intercepted seven Shahed-type attack drones and a cruise missile launched by Russia. However, one Russian attack drone managed to hit a critical infrastructure facility in the Sumy Region.

Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry claimed that its forces had shot down 25 Ukrainian drones over western Russia and Crimea.
