Resident doctors at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, have commenced an indefinite strike over persistent power outages in their residential quarters.
Dr. Uthman Adedeji, General Secretary of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at UCH, confirmed the development on Monday, stating that the industrial action was triggered by the hospital’s failure to fully restore electricity to all affected areas.
The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) had reconnected UCH last Wednesday after over 100 days of power outage. However, only some residential quarters regained power, leaving others in darkness.
“Following our Emergency General Meeting (EGM), it was observed that while some quarters had been reconnected, others remain without electricity,” Adedeji said. “As a result, we have no choice but to proceed with the planned total and indefinite strike until all residential quarters are adequately supplied with power.”
While acknowledging efforts by UCH management to resolve the issue, he stressed that more needed to be done to ensure a conducive working environment for medical personnel.
The association assured that it would continuously review the situation, urging swift action to prevent further disruptions to healthcare services at the hospital.
