U.S. and Iran Report ‘Positive’ Progress in Oman Talks, Set to Resume Negotiations Next Week

The United States and Iran have confirmed holding what both sides described as “positive” and “constructive” high-level talks in Oman on Saturday—their first direct engagement since the start of President Donald Trump’s second presidential campaign.

The discussions, centered on Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, marked a potential turning point in long-stalled diplomatic efforts. Both parties agreed to reconvene next Saturday to continue negotiations.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi told state television that the talks were held in a “productive, calm and positive atmosphere,” signaling cautious optimism for a possible breakthrough.

“I believe we’re very close to establishing a framework for formal negotiations,” Araqchi said. “If we can finalize this framework next week, it will pave the way for substantive discussions.”

The meeting included Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steven Witkoff, and U.S. Ambassador to Oman Ana Escrogima, along with Araqchi representing Tehran. In a statement, the White House called the session “very positive and constructive,” adding that both sides showed a “serious intent” to move forward.

“These are highly complex issues,” the White House said. “But today’s direct communication by Special Envoy Witkoff was a meaningful step toward achieving a mutually beneficial resolution.”

While no formal agreement has been reached, both sides expressed a shared desire to accelerate the process.

“We are not interested in talks for the sake of talks,” Araqchi emphasized. “Both Iran and the U.S. are looking for a concrete agreement in the short term.”

Speaking aboard Air Force One later Saturday evening, President Trump offered a measured assessment: “I think they’re going OK,” he said of the talks.

The upcoming follow-up meeting is now seen as a key moment in determining whether the two longtime adversaries can move beyond years of tension and mistrust to find common ground on nuclear and regional security issues.
