Trump Reflects on Assassination Attempt in Somber RNC Speech, Vows Major Immigration Crackdown

Donald Trump delivered a reflective speech at the Republican National Convention, stating he was “not supposed to be here,” following an attempt on his life just five days earlier.

During the Thursday night address, Trump recounted the harrowing details of the assassination attempt at a rally in Pennsylvania, where bullets grazed his ear. He praised the Secret Service for their swift action, crediting “the grace of almighty God” for his survival.

The speech, lasting 90 minutes, took on a more subdued tone at times, focusing on familiar targets like undocumented migrants, Biden’s foreign policy, and China. Notably, Trump only mentioned his rival, President Joe Biden, once.

Trump’s wife Melania made a rare public appearance, joining him on stage with other family members. The event also included a memorial for Corey Comperatore, who was killed during the attack. The suspected gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by authorities.

Observers noted the overall bombast of the evening, which featured balloons and an appearance by wrestling legend Hulk Hogan, contrasted with Trump’s more restrained delivery. He pledged to re-write his address after the attack, which included a “very cordial” conversation with Biden.

In his speech, Trump promised to curb illegal immigration with the “largest deportation operation in the history of our country” and vowed to end international crises created by the current administration. He also proposed creating a version of Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system and pledged to restore “peace, stability, and harmony all throughout the world,” though he provided few specifics on how he would achieve these goals.
