Former President Donald Trump held a rally in North Carolina to showcase his economic plan as the race for the White House tightens. In Asheville, Trump promised to reduce consumer prices and raise wages through tax cuts, energy policy changes, and rolling back environmental regulations. Despite frequent diversions from his main message, including attacks on Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump reiterated his commitment to lowering energy costs and criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the economy. The Harris campaign responded, accusing Trump of ignoring key economic issues. The event comes as polls indicate a competitive race, with Harris gaining ground in several key states.
The development boosts her campaign in critical swing states like Michigan, where UAW members made up 9.2% of the votes for Biden in 2020, according to the union. “When we call Donald Trump a scab, this is exactly what we mean. When we say Trump opposes everything our union stands for, this is what we mean,” said UAW President Shawn Fain in a statement.
Sean O’Brien, President of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, shared similar views. Mr. O’Brien spoke at last month’s Republican National Convention, referring to Trump as “one tough SOB.”
Before his conversation with Elon Musk, the Republican candidate had shown some support for labor issues. Earlier on Wednesday, Trump cast his ballot in Florida’s primary election, submitting his vote during the early voting period. Despite being a frequent critic of early voting, claiming without evidence that it increases the risk of election fraud, he participated in it himself this time.
