President Donald Trump announced Friday that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on August 15, 2025, in Alaska, describing the event as “highly anticipated.”
“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!” Trump wrote on his social media platform.
The president had earlier teased the timing and venue, telling reporters, “I think you’ll be very happy.” He suggested the location would be “very popular for a lot of reasons,” but had withheld confirmation until Friday’s post.
Trump’s comments came as he hosted the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan at the White House for a peace summit. Asked if the meeting represented Russia’s “last chance” to achieve peace with Ukraine, Trump rejected the phrasing.
“I don’t like using the term ‘last chance,’” he said. “I think my gut instinct really tells me that we have a shot at it… but we have a shot at it.”
Friday also marked the deadline Trump had set for Putin to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine or face “secondary sanctions” targeting countries that purchase Russian oil. However, the president declined to comment on whether new economic penalties would be imposed, with attention now shifting toward next week’s one-on-one talks in Alaska.
The planned meeting comes at a pivotal moment, with uncertainty over both Russia’s willingness to halt its war in Ukraine and Washington’s readiness to escalate economic pressure on Moscow.
