Top Hamas Leader Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Southern Gaza

A senior Hamas political leader, Salah al-Bardaweel, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, a Hamas official confirmed early Sunday.

Local sources reported that the strike killed both Bardaweel—a member of the group’s political bureau—and his wife.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) has not yet issued an official statement regarding the incident.

The strike comes amid renewed Israeli military operations in Gaza, following the collapse of a ceasefire agreement brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States.

Israel resumed heavy bombardment on Tuesday, accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire that had been in place since January 19, ending nearly two months of relative calm.

Hamas has rejected Israel’s claims, accusing Israel of breaching the agreement first.

According to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry, at least 32 Palestinians were killed across the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours alone.

The renewed violence is part of a wider Israeli campaign launched in response to the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led cross-border attack, in which around 1,200 people were killed and 251 hostages were taken.

Since then, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that over 49,500 Palestinians have been killed, with widespread destruction to homes, hospitals, and civilian infrastructure throughout the enclave.
