Tompolo Backs Fubara’s Reinstatement, Urges Protection of Ijaw Interests

Former Niger Delta militant leader, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, has voiced strong support for the reinstatement of suspended Rivers State Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara. Speaking during his birthday celebration in Gbaramatu Kingdom, Warri South-West LGA of Delta State, Tompolo expressed optimism that “dialogue and understanding will prevail” and that Fubara would reclaim his mandate.

Fubara, his deputy, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly were suspended following the declaration of a state of emergency by President Bola Tinubu on March 18, 2025. The federal government subsequently appointed retired Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, as sole administrator of the state for an initial six-month period.

Tompolo, addressing guests at the event, emphasized Ijaw unity and resilience, stating, “Even in Rivers State, our son Fubara will return to his rightful place.”

He issued a stern warning against political actions aimed at marginalizing Bayelsa State or the Ijaw people. “If you think power lies solely in being president or governor, and you attempt to undermine Bayelsa, you will face consequences. One of us is stronger than twenty,” Tompolo declared.

Reflecting on Fubara’s political emergence, he acknowledged former governor Nyesom Wike’s role in the appointment but lamented the lack of consultation with the Ijaw community. “Wike is my friend, but when he chose Fubara, no Ijaw man was involved or consulted. Yet, here we are standing for truth,” he said.

Tompolo’s remarks underscore growing tensions in the Niger Delta over federal actions in Rivers State and highlight a call for greater respect for ethnic representation and regional dialogue.
