Tokyo 2025: Amusan Wins Silver, Extends Nigeria’s Medal Record

Nigeria’s sprint hurdler, Tobi Amusan, delivered another historic performance at the Tokyo 2025 World Athletics Championships, winning silver in the women’s 100m hurdles on Monday night.

Under the floodlights of the National Stadium, the defending champion clocked 12.29 seconds in the final, narrowly behind Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji, who stormed to gold in 12.24 seconds  a new Swiss national record. The United States’ Grace Stark clinched bronze in 12.34 seconds, while compatriot Masai Russell, the reigning Olympic champion, finished fourth in 12.44 seconds.

Poland’s Pia Skrzyszowska and the Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton shared fifth place with season’s bests of 12.49 seconds, followed by Jamaica’s Danielle Williams (12.53) and the Netherlands’ Nadine Visser (12.56).

Earlier in the day, Amusan booked her spot in the final with a commanding semifinal win in 12.36 seconds (-0.2), ahead of Visser (12.45) and Skrzyszowska (12.51).

Although denied a second consecutive world title, the 28-year-old Nigerian added a silver medal to her illustrious résumé, which already includes five national titles, three straight Diamond League trophies (2021–2023), and her world record of 12.12 seconds set in Eugene in 2022  a feat that also earned Nigeria its first-ever World Championships gold.

This latest achievement takes Nigeria’s overall medal tally at the World Championships to 12, with Amusan remaining the only Nigerian athlete to have struck gold in the competition’s history.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) hailed her performance. “Tobi Amusan has made Nigeria proud once again,” said Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director General of the NSC. “Winning silver at the World Championships is no small feat, and doing so with such class shows her world-class ability and fighting spirit. She remains a symbol of hope, determination, and excellence for our nation. The entire country stands tall in celebration of her achievement.”
