President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to democratic values and national unity, saying he remains undeterred by criticism even from those who attack him personally. The President made the remarks during his first official visit to Benue State on Wednesday, amid widespread insecurity and renewed violence that has left hundreds dead and displaced.
Addressing traditional leaders, political figures, and residents in Makurdi, Tinubu stated:
“Not everybody will like you in politics. They hate me like hell too, but I am here. I am the President, and under a democratic regime, I made a promise that I will even protect my abusers and accusers with the principles of democracy and freedom of prosperity. We will protect them! Abuse me all you want.”
Tinubu’s comments struck a tone of resilience and openness, emphasizing that constructive criticism is welcome and can help improve leadership.
“I read papers every time and listen to the TV when I have time… those that are abusing me and what type of abuse and I am learning from some of the critical ones too because I can’t see it all.”
Amid rising farmer-herder conflicts, the President urged Governor Hyacinth Alia and community leaders to prioritize peace and human life over political rivalry or provocation.
“The value of human life is greater than that of a cow,” he said.
“It is only when you open the door to conflict that political enemies will come in… They do not want you to succeed. Are you just realizing that, Governor? No matter what I do, they will still abuse me.”
The President’s visit comes days after attacks in Guma and other communities triggered public outrage and calls for a firmer federal response. Tinubu met with survivors and pledged decisive action, including increased collaboration with local stakeholders to restore peace and security.
The visit signals the Presidency’s intent to personally engage with crisis-affected areas and rebuild public trust in government efforts to end violence in Benue and other North Central states.
