Tinted Glass: Lagos CP Warns Officers Against Extortion

Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has warned officers and men of the command against using the enforcement of tinted glass permits as an avenue for extortion.

Jimoh issued the caution on Wednesday at the command’s headquarters in Ikeja after briefing personnel on the exercise, which begins nationwide on October 2. He said any officer found harassing motorists or demanding bribes would face disciplinary action under the Police Act.

The commissioner explained that his directive followed instructions from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, at the recently concluded strategic conference in Abuja.

“All officers and men of the Lagos State Police Command – from outposts to divisional levels and headquarters – have been warned to respect citizens’ rights while enforcing the law,” Jimoh said.

He emphasised that the permit enforcement must be conducted professionally and without financial exploitation.
“Enforcement should not be used as a means of extortion against members of the public. The portals have been open for several months for Nigerians to access and register. After registration, they are expected to visit the police command or any formation for data capturing,” he explained.

Jimoh also reminded motorists that obtaining the permit is free and urged them to resist paying for it. He assured Lagos residents that officers would conduct themselves responsibly and encouraged the public to report any misconduct or extortion attempts through available complaint channels.
