In parts of Kwara State, Nigeria, people are fleeing their homes in fear after suspected terrorists sent warning letters to several rural communities. These letters threaten attacks at any time. In the last week, at least four communities received such messages. The latest one was dropped in Ira town (which connects Inaja and Aho) in Oyun Local Government Area on Thursday. Earlier, a similar letter went to Dunshigogo in Kaiama Local Government Area, shortly after a deadly attack on February 3 in nearby Woro town. That attack killed over 170 people and led to dozens being kidnapped.
The letter to Ira was signed by someone claiming to represent the “Nigeria Terrorist Association” (NTA). It said things like: “This message is from Nigeria Terrorist Association, NTA. Our motor: we kill, we kidnapping, and destroying. No town or place that is scared us to destroy… We search and gaddering information before we rade. We heared about this town Ira, you people strong, and have many powerful man to face our organisation. Be ready for us at any time any date, noting concern us about your oracle or powerful we left kaiama we move to Ira, Inaja, Aho and town around.”
The threats have caused widespread panic. Residents of Ira, Inaja, and Aho started leaving their homes right away, moving to safer places like nearby towns such as Offa. Farms are empty, schools and businesses are closed, and normal life has stopped. People are scared because of the recent massacre in Kaiama, where many died. A local leader in Ira said the letter was dropped by two men on a motorcycle at a bike park near the central mosque in the afternoon.

Once leaders saw it, they told the police, DSS, soldiers, and other security forces. Now, patrols are going on in the area, but many people still feel unsafe and have left temporarily. They want their local vigilantes (community guards), who are away for training, to come back home quickly.
Security agencies are on high alert. The Kwara State Police said they are investigating the letter to check if it’s genuine and who sent it. They have added more officers and are working with vigilantes. The DSS and army also confirmed they know about it and are stepping up patrols.
The chairman of Oyun Local Government held an emergency meeting with traditional rulers and security officials to plan how to protect everyone. They are asking people to stay calm, watch for strangers, and report anything suspicious. For now, fear remains high, and many families are praying while hoping the government acts fast to stop any possible attack.
