Daniel Hernandez, the rapper known as Tekashi 6ix9ine, surrendered to federal authorities Tuesday afternoon at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, the same facility currently holding Nicolás Maduro and his wife.
Hernandez arrived at the Sunset Park jail at about 2 p.m., the prearranged time for his surrender. He is set to serve a 90-day sentence after being found in violation of the terms of his supervised release.
The three-month jail term stems from a federal court ruling tied to his earlier criminal case. Hernandez was indicted in 2018 in a high-profile racketeering prosecution involving members of a criminal organization with which he had been affiliated. After pleading guilty to conspiracy and other charges, he testified against associates in exchange for a reduced sentence.
According to his attorney, Hernandez is expected to be housed separately from the general population, likely in a restricted unit reserved for high-profile inmates — the same area where prominent detainees such as Maduro and Luigi Mangione are being held.
His lawyer said the rapper is prepared to serve the sentence, put the matter behind him and return to his music career once released.
The Metropolitan Detention Center has long drawn scrutiny for its conditions, gaining notoriety through past inmates including Sean Combs, Ghislaine Maxwell and R. Kelly. Complaints over food quality, cleanliness and safety have led critics to label the facility “Hell on Earth.”
