Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas Dumps PDP, Formally Joins APC

Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has formally joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), marking another significant defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Kefas received his APC membership card from the party’s ward chairman in Hospital Ward, Wukari Local Government Area, confirming his registration as a member of the ruling party. He disclosed that a new date would soon be announced for his official public defection ceremony.

Addressing party executives shortly after his registration, the governor pledged his commitment to the development of Taraba State, promising inclusive governance and improved delivery of democratic dividends to residents.

The governor had earlier announced plans to defect to the APC on November 19 but postponed the move following the abduction of schoolchildren in Kebbi State.

“On November 19, I will officially transition from PDP to APC. This movement is about the destiny of the people of Taraba, and we are expecting many visitors for the ceremony,” Kefas had said at the time.

Two days before the planned defection, the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, John Kizito, alongside 15 other lawmakers, also defected from the PDP to the APC. They cited internal crises within the PDP at both the state and national levels, as well as the need to align the state with the federal government.

Kefas’ defection further deepens the crisis within the PDP and adds to the growing wave of high-profile exits from the opposition party. In recent months, several sitting governors have moved to the APC, including Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, and Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, signalling a widening political realignment across the country.
