Supreme Court Set To Render Verdicts In Seven Governorship Appeals On Friday

On Friday, January 12, 2024, the Supreme Court is set to deliver judgments in seven governorship appeals, commencing at 9 am.
The states under consideration include Lagos, Kano, Zamfara, Plateau, Ebonyi, Bauchi, and Cross River.
Yusuf vs. Gawuna:
In late December, the apex court reserved judgment in the appeal filed by Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf challenging the decisions of the Court of Appeal and the State Election Petitions Tribunal.
The tribunal had nullified Yusuf’s victory, affirming Nasiru Gawuna of the APC as the duly elected governor. Despite the Court of Appeal’s agreement with the tribunal’s judgment, Yusuf pursued redress in the Supreme Court.
Mutfwang vs. Goshwe:
On January 9, 2024, the Supreme Court reserved judgment in the appeal filed by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, seeking to overturn the Court of Appeal’s decision nullifying his election.
Mutfwang’s counsel argued that the respondents had no right to question how a party elects its state executives. The governor proceeded to the apex court after the appellate court sacked him and ordered a Certificate of Return to Goshwe.
Lawal vs. Matawalle:
In November, the Appeal Court nullified the election of Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal.
Despite the tribunal’s earlier ruling upholding Lawal’s victory, the appellate court ordered a fresh election in three local government areas. Unfazed, Lawal sought redress in the Supreme Court.
Mohammed vs. Abubakar:
Also in November, the appellate court affirmed the victory of Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed in the March 18 governorship election.
The court ruled against the APC’s Sadique Abubakar’s plea, dismissing the claim that election forms were improperly filled.
Sanwo-Olu vs. GRV, Jandor:
The Lagos Appeal Court upheld the tribunal’s judgment affirming the victory of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu in the governorship election.
Dismissing the appeals of the PDP and LP for lack of merit, the court affirmed Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat’s victory. Dissatisfied, the LP and PDP candidates approached the Supreme Court.
Nwifuru vs. Odii:
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court reserved judgment in the Ebonyi State governorship election appeal.
The Court of Appeal had previously upheld the election of APC’s Francis Nwifuru, dismissing the appeal filed by PDP’s Chukwuma Odii. Seeking redress, Odii approached the Supreme Court.
