The Super Falcons of Nigeria concluded their campaign in the 2024 Women’s Olympic Football Tournament with a 3-1 loss to Japan in their final Group C match.
This marked the team’s return to the Olympics after a 16-year absence, but they were unable to secure any points, having previously suffered 0-1 defeats against Brazil and Spain.
Japan took control of the game early, keeping Nigeria on the defensive. Despite a commendable save by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie in the seventh minute and a crucial block by Osinachi Ohale shortly after, the pressure from the Asian champions was relentless. Chelsea’s Maika Hamano opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, and Mina Tanaka extended Japan’s lead ten minutes later.
Nigeria showed resilience, with PSG’s new signing Jennifer Echegini scoring a goal just before halftime. However, Japan restored their two-goal advantage in stoppage time of the first half with a superb free-kick from Hana Kitagawa.
In the second half, the Super Falcons dominated possession but were unable to break through Japan’s solid defense, which focused on counter-attacks. A penalty was initially awarded to Japan in the 52nd minute but was later overturned after a VAR review, following an incident involving Rasheedat Ajibade. Ultimately, Nigeria finished at the bottom of Group C, exiting the tournament without a point from their three matches.
