Nigeria kicked off their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Tanzania in Group C at Fes, Morocco, on Tuesday.
The three-time African champions arrived in Morocco looking to bounce back after missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to go further than their runners-up finish at the last tournament. Despite recent disappointments, Nigeria entered the competition as one of the favourites, boasting experienced players and attacking depth.
Coach Éric Chelle emphasised focus ahead of the match:
“Our first opponent is ourselves. We must focus on ourselves and ignore external distractions.”
The Eagles struck first in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi headed home a precise cross from Alex Iwobi. Nigeria appeared to double their lead early in the second half, but a Victor Osimhen goal was ruled out for offside.
Tanzania responded through Charles M’Mombwa in the 52nd minute, levelling the score with a first-time finish. However, Ademola Lookman quickly restored Nigeria’s advantage with a sharp strike from outside the box, securing the win.
The victory marked a strong start for the Super Eagles, who are determined to restore national pride and make a deep run in the tournament despite their recent World Cup setback.
