Super Eagles Defeat Cameroon 2-0 In AFCON 2023 Last-16 Clash

Nigeria’s Super Eagles secured a resounding 2-0 victory over old adversaries Cameroon in a thrilling Last-16 encounter at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023.
Ademola Lookman emerged as the hero, netting both goals to propel Nigeria into the quarter-finals.
Initially, Nigeria faced disappointment when an early Semi Ajayi goal was disallowed following a VAR review.
However, relentless pressure from Victor Osimhen disrupted the Cameroon defense, allowing Lookman to break the deadlock in the 36th minute.
With a solid defensive display, the Super Eagles thwarted the Indomitable Lions’ attempts, ensuring a comfortable lead until Lookman sealed the victory with a goal in the 90th minute.
The match witnessed fervent support from 22,085 fans at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
In the upcoming quarter-finals, Nigeria will face Angola at the same venue next Friday, fueled by their impressive performance against Cameroon.
Led by the formidable Osimhen, the Super Eagles pose a significant threat to reigning champions Senegal as they vie for their fourth continental crown.
The fixture between Nigeria and Cameroon holds historical significance, with Cameroon securing three of their five titles after defeating Nigeria in the final. However, Nigeria emerged victorious in the most recent encounter between the two teams during the last 16 in Egypt five years ago.
Nigeria’s relentless pressing game troubled Cameroon from the outset, with the disallowed goal early in the match setting the tone for a gripping showdown.
Osimhen’s instrumental role in initiating attacks and Lookman’s clinical finishing proved decisive, despite Cameroon’s attempts to rally late in the game.
Nigeria’s coach, Jose Peseiro, emphasized the team’s defensive solidity as a priority, a strategy that proved effective throughout the match, even after goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili was stretchered off due to injury.
The introduction of Vincent Aboubakar failed to alter Cameroon’s fate, as Nigeria maintained control until the final whistle.
Calvin Bassey’s precise cross found Lookman, whose composed finish sealed Nigeria’s victory and propelled them into the quarter-finals of AFCON 2023.
