Sultan of Sokoto Declares July 7 as Start of Islamic New Year 1446 AH

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, and President General of the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, has officially announced Sunday, July 7, 2024, as the first day of Muharram, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1446 After Hijrah.
This declaration was conveyed in a statement signed by Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto. The statement clarified that no new moon sightings for Muharram were reported on Friday, July 5, 2024, corresponding to the 29th of Dhul’Hijja 1445 AH. Therefore, Saturday, July 6, 2024, will be observed as the 30th of Dhul’Hijja.
The Sultan extended his warm wishes to Nigerian Muslims, encouraging them to pray for the peace, progress, and development of the nation during this significant occasion.
