On Wednesday, June 7, 2023, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) will commence a nationwide strike.
The NLC made the decision following a discussion about the recent hike in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, at an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Friday (yesterday).
Executive members of the affiliate associate unions attended the meeting, which started a few minutes after 12 o’clock.
The trade union group had kicked against the removal of the fuel subsidy announced by President Bola Tinubu on Monday, May 29, while delivering his inaugural speech.
NLC President Joe Ajaero, however, said that the government, specifically the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited, had until Wednesday of the following week to revert to the old price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol. This was after an emergency meeting of the union’s NEC in Abuja on Friday.
Ajaero continued by saying that if the Federal Government didn’t comply with the deadline, there would be nationwide strike that would last indefinitely.
