World champions Spain came from behind to defeat England 3-2 at Wembley on Saturday, extending their unbeaten run to a European-record 39 matches.

Lamine Yamal gave Spain an early lead after Marc Guehi’s mistake allowed him to win possession before curling a left-footed effort past James Trafford and in off the inside of the post.

England responded strongly, with Anthony Gordon equalising in the 36th minute after combining with Jude Bellingham before calmly finishing past Unai Simon.

Four minutes later, England moved ahead when captain Harry Kane headed Nico O’Reilly’s cross into the net via a deflection off Marc Cucurella.

Kane missed the chance to extend England’s lead early in the second half after Bellingham was brought down in the penalty area. The striker slipped while taking the spot-kick and struck the crossbar.

Spain punished England’s failure to capitalise, with substitute Alex Baena levelling after O’Reilly lost possession.

Mikel Oyarzabal then completed the comeback with a composed dinked finish following a clinical attacking move.

Spain, who defeated England in the Euro 2024 final, controlled the closing stages as England failed to find an equaliser.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente said his team had largely controlled the match against what he called a “superpower” England.

Asked about the 39-match unbeaten run, he said: “These are sensational moments…. Numbers are one thing, objective indicators are what we see. But what is important is that we still want to grow, we still want to improve.”

Kane admitted England had again struggled to maintain their best level throughout the game.

England’s early defensive error, Kane’s missed penalty and O’Reilly’s mistake before Spain’s second goal proved costly despite a strong response after the visitors took the lead.

Gordon was one of England’s standout performers, while Bellingham also impressed. Trafford, deputising for Jordan Pickford, made several important saves and did little to weaken his case for a regular starting role.

The result leaves England to regroup after another defeat to Spain, while the European champions continue their remarkable unbeaten streak.
