Sowore Granted ₦10M Bail, Leads Protest Against IGP Egbetokun

A Federal High Court has granted Omoyele Sowore, convener of the #RevolutionNow movement, bail set at ₦10 million with one surety in like sum.

Justice Musa Liman ruled that the surety must be a responsible individual with landed property of equivalent value. The original property documents and a passport photograph must be submitted to the court registrar. Sowore was also ordered to surrender his international passport and fulfill the bail conditions within 24 hours or remain in police custody.

Sowore was invited by the police on January 27, 2025, at the Force Criminal Investigation Department, where he was granted administrative bail but rejected the conditions, opting to remain in detention. The police later filed a 16-count cybercrime charge against him.

Among the allegations was a post on December 20, 2024, in which he referred to Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, as “the illegal IG of Nigeria Police Force” on his X handle. Other charges cited posts where he accused Egbetokun of incompetence and predicted that he would “destroy the Nigeria police if we don’t act now.”

Sowore pleaded not guilty to all charges.

Shortly after securing bail, he led a protest in Abuja on January 30, 2025, demanding Egbetokun’s removal. Protesters carried placards with #EgbetokunMustGo, accusing the IGP of violating retirement rules while other officers were dismissed for similar infractions.

In a post on X, Sowore wrote:
“These two police officers @PoliceNG were found to have committed the same infraction by failing to relinquish their positions upon retirement. One, Inspector Linus Okoro, was taken into custody for wrongdoing, while the other, Kayode Egbetokun, proceeded to arrest citizens who called out his infractions. This is unfair! #RevolutionNow #EgbetokunMustGo.”
