Seven people are missing after a British-flagged sailing yacht sank off the coast of Sicily early Monday, according to Italy’s fire and rescue service. The 56-meter (183ft) yacht had 22 people on board, including four Britons who are among the missing, Italian media reported. The passengers also included American and Canadian nationals.
Rescue efforts saved 15 people, including a one-year-old child, after the yacht encountered severe weather near Palermo. Divers are searching a wreck located at a depth of 50 meters for the missing individuals, while eight of the rescued are receiving hospital treatment.
The Italian Coastguard said a nearby vessel assisted in the rescue before emergency services arrived. The yacht, identified as the “Bayesian,” last transmitted from near Porticello just after 04:00 local time, moments before the incident.
Camper and Nicholsons International, the yacht’s management company, confirmed they were handling an onboard situation but did not provide further details. The British foreign ministry has yet to respond to inquiries about the incident.
