Senator Monguno: Government That Can’t Protect Citizens Has No Right to Rule

Senator Mohammed Monguno, representing Borno North and serving as the Chief Whip of the Senate, has stated that any government incapable of ensuring the safety of its citizens should not remain in power.

In a conversation with News Central in Maiduguri following a critical security meeting, Monguno expressed deep alarm over the recent upsurge in Boko Haram attacks across Borno State. He confirmed that the meeting with security chiefs was convened to advocate for the immediate redeployment of troops and resources to the northeast region.

“We decided to meet with the security chiefs in light of the resurgence of Boko Haram insurgency in various parts of the state,” Monguno explained. “We are calling for the return of troops, who were redeployed to the northwest, to Borno State, to tackle the insurgency.”

The senator underlined that the government’s primary duty is to ensure the protection of its citizens. “Security is the essence of governance. The whole purpose of government is to guarantee peace, order, and good governance. Any government that fails in this responsibility should not last a minute longer than necessary.”

The purpose of the meeting, Monguno explained, was to unite all security stakeholders in the state to develop a coordinated approach to counter the insurgent threat. “We brought all relevant actors together to exchange ideas and collaborate in addressing the security challenges affecting our district,” he added.

These remarks follow concerns raised by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, who recently highlighted a sharp increase in Boko Haram attacks and kidnappings. Zulum voiced his worries during an April 8 security meeting attended by military leaders, traditional rulers, and other key figures.

The resurgence of Boko Haram poses a significant setback to the security improvements made in the state, calling for urgent and coordinated measures to restore safety and stability.
