Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, demanding an immediate investigation into the assassination allegation made against him by Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the Kogi Central Senator.
In his petition, Akpabio calls for the prosecution of Akpoti-Uduaghan for criminal defamation, incitement, false accusation, and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace. The allegation stems from a statement made by Akpoti-Uduaghan on April 1 during a homecoming event in Kogi State, where she accused Akpabio of instructing Usman Ododo, the current governor of Kogi, and former Governor Yahaya Bello to have her assassinated.
Akpabio vehemently denied the accusation, describing it as a “heinous lie” aimed at damaging his reputation and inciting public unrest. In the petition, Akpabio expressed concern that such a serious and unfounded allegation could destabilize democratic institutions and tarnish the image of public officeholders.
“This statement is not only a heinous lie but also a reckless attempt to damage my reputation, endanger my life, and incite political unrest,” Akpabio stated in his petition.
The feud between Akpabio and Akpoti-Uduaghan escalated after a clash in the Senate over seating arrangements, which led to Akpoti-Uduaghan accusing Akpabio of sexual harassment. In March, the Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan for violating Senate rules following the confrontation.
