The Nigerian Senate is making significant strides toward passing long-awaited tax reform bills, as key stakeholders near agreement on previously contentious issues.

Senator Abba Moro, Chair of the Senate’s ad hoc Committee on Tax Reform, announced plans to hold public hearings soon, paving the way for the bills’ third reading. This progress comes despite opposition, particularly from the northern regions.

Following a high-level meeting with Attorney General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) Chairman Zacch Adedeji, and other fiscal policy leaders, Moro expressed optimism about the collaborative efforts.

“We’ve engaged with the Attorney General, the FIRS Chairman, and other stakeholders to synthesize our positions. Our goal is to deliver a law that truly serves all Nigerians,” Moro said.

While details of the adjustments remain undisclosed, Moro confirmed significant progress, with further meetings planned to finalize the framework.

FIRS Chairman Adedeji shared similar optimism, stating that contentious issues had been resolved during the discussions.

“All the so-called grey areas were identified and clarified during the discussions. The engagement has been very productive, and I can confidently say we are on the right track,” Adedeji affirmed.

He emphasized the reforms’ critical role in modernizing Nigeria’s tax system and boosting revenue. “These laws are essential for Nigeria. Today, we saw the framework of the law come together, with the Attorney General, lawmakers, and operators all on the same page,” Adedeji added.

The Senate’s efforts mark a significant step toward overhauling Nigeria’s tax framework. Public hearings and further deliberations will shape the reforms, which aim to enhance revenue collection and improve efficiency in the tax system.
